SMIL offers a breast Tomosynthesis (3D) exam which enables SMIL’s partnering Radiologists to take 3D images of the breasts. Breast Tomosynthesis minimizes the impact of overlapping breast tissue during imaging because the camera moves over the breast taking images from multiple angles. These images are combined to create a three dimensional rendering of the entire breast. Breast Tomosynthesis is performed at the same time as a 2D mammogram.
Breast Tomosynthesis allows SMIL’s partnering Radiologists to manipulate the images to see areas of concern from all angles. Breast Tomosynthesis (3D) provides more images for Radiologists to review as they screen for breast abnormalities and breast cancer.
The benefits of breast Tomosynthesis (3D) include:
- Earlier detection of small breast cancers that can sometimes be hidden during 2D mammography
- Greater accuracy in pinpointing size, shape and location of abnormalities
- Fewer unnecessary biopsies or additional tests
- Greater likelihood of detecting multiple breast tumors, which occur in 15% of breast cancer patients.
