Ultrasound Guided Breast Biopsy

SMIL offers an ultrasound guided breast biopsy which uses a fine needle to to remove cells from a suspicious area of the breast.  The cells are then examined under a microscope by a pathologist to determine a diagnosis. An ultrasound guided breast biopsy is not designed to remove the entire lesion (abnormality), but most of a very small lesion may be removed in the process of a biopsy.

An ultrasound guided breast biopsy exam can be performed when a breast ultrasound or other breast scan shows an abnormality such as:

  • A suspicious solid mass
  • A distortion in the structure of the breast tissue
  • An area of abnormal tissue change
