If you suffer from varicose or spider veins, you are certainly not alone. Varicose veins affect an estimated 40% of women and 25% of men. Far more than a merely cosmetic condition, varicose veins can be associated with pain, heaviness, burning or tingling sensations, tenderness, and swelling. if left untreated, you may develop more serious complications such as blood clots, inflammation, ankle sores, skin ulcers or bleeding. However, with the safe, outpatient treatments available to you today from the Vein Clinic at Scottsdale Medical Imaging, there are more reasons than ever to rid yourself of unwanted varicose or spider veins.
The Vein Clinic at SMIL is part of Scottsdale Medical Imaging, the largest and most established medical imaging and image-guided intervention practice in Scottsdale. That is important to you because the accurate evaluation for the cause of varicose vein disease depends upon proper imaging, and because many of the treatments for varicose veins are done through minimally invasive techniques utilizing ultrasound guidance. Ultrasound is an imaging method that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce precise images of structures within your body.
The interventional radiologists at The Vein Clinic have specialized training in using the imaging tools to establish the correct diagnosis, and in using real-time imaging as a guide during catheter-based or injection treatments. The interventional radiologists at SMIL are certified by the American Board of Radiology in both Vascular and Interventional Radiology.
After your initial consultation, a complete venous ultrasound evaluation is used to identify the source of the varicose veins and guide treatment. Once the source of the problem is identified, we will provide you with a treatment plan that may include one of the following procedures:
Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA)
EVLA is a minimally invasive alternative to traditional vein stripping and is performed on an outpatient basis and has shown a 93-97% success rate with fewer recurrences and complications than seen with surgical stripping. Most patients can resume their normal activities within one to two days.
Ambulatory Phlebectomy
Ambulatory Phlebectomy is a method of removing varicose veins on the surface of the legs and is done in the office under local anesthesia. The varicose veins are removed through tiny incisions which are so small that no stitches are required.
Sclerotherapy
Sclerotherapy is a popular method of eliminating superficial spider veins in which a liquid called a sclerosing agent is injected into the veins. This process causes a gradual fading of the treated vessel over a period of several weeks to several months.
