Coronary Artery Disease
– CAD - is the leading cause of death and the
leading cause of permanent disability in the Western
world. About 14 million Americans have CAD. According
to the American Heart Association, in 2003, about 1-1.5
million Americans experienced an acute coronary event,
and more than 500,000 patients died of CAD. In fact,
the first manifestation of CAD in a number of patients
is death - this situation is often referred to as ‘sudden
cardiac death’. In 2003, more than 12 million
patients were found to have symptomatic CAD, and the
cost of diagnosing and treating the disease amounts
to nearly $115 billion each year.
